Pros so excited at riding here

The cyclists of Grand Cayman have long dreamed of an invitational stage race event to rival that of the Bermuda Grand Prix which has been a popular end of season wind down event for pro riders.

Now the Cayman Islands Cycling Association is about to make that dream a reality with the Invitational Stage Race from 8-10 November and the Kiddies Race sponsored by RE/MAX Cayman Islands on 15 November.

A field of around 60 riders is expected which include celebrity riders Christian Vandevelde (fifth at this year’s Tour de France), Peter Luttenburger (fifth in 1996 Tour de France) and many other professional as well as local talents.

Vandevelde said: ‘I can’t wait to get down to race in Grand Cayman. It’s been a long season and having a treat like the Grand Cayman race at the end of the year is a bonus.

‘I will be with my wife and friends racing on an island…..life could be worse!’

‘I’m very excited to come back to the Caymans after visiting all three islands in 2000,’ said Peter Luttenburger. ‘I’m looking forward to probably the most beautiful race on the planet.’

Steve Evans, event organiser, expects about the same amount of kids for their race, the following Saturday.

The event will take place in George Town and commence just before the Cardboard Boat Race for Pirates Week. The following age groups can participate in the event: 2 to 5 years, 5-8, 8-12 and 12-16. The very young ones will race over 50-100 yards and the older ones will rally around town.

To enter the kiddies race turn up on the day. The entry is free of charge but a guardian must be present.
