Promote personal health

Dependence upon a variety of over-the-counter medications to help us manage the aches, pains and discomforts of our physical body and sometimes roller-coaster ride of emotions may be causing a new form of drug dependence.

Just catch a few hours of down time with television and count the number of advertisements promoting this or that drug. Listen even more carefully to the potential side-effect risks, and you may have to ask yourself, has the world become a chemical soup? It’s alarming.

More alarming to me is the number of people who ask questions about the use of weight-loss medications and then admit to high blood pressure, heart issues, and diabetes. Many of these over-the-counter weight-loss products promote increased metabolism and promise weight loss, but at what cost? Many of these drugs are known to increase heart palpitations.

The use of anti-depressant drugs has become almost ‘the norm’. It is frightening how many people tell me they are on them. There are certainly situations where individuals need anti-depressants, and doctors are, hopefully, being cognizant of when to prescribe them.

However, overcoming depression through repeated courses of anti-depressants over time is again, chemical soup, and does not help us address the underlying causes of the melancholy. We can become healthier and happier naturally.

During a recent period of increased physical training, I purchased a well-known product containing acetaminophen to help reduce inflammation and soreness. It was only when my cell phone beeped well after my usual wake-up time that I was able to wake myself out of the fog of a drugged sleep. It took two hours to get over the hang-over feeling. No more chemical soup for me; some slow stretches and a water workout is my own recommended remedy.

According to an article in The Caymanian Compass, (Thursday, 30 October), the cost of new drugs is skyrocketing. More expensive newer drugs are now on the market, but it is yet unclear whether these new and more expensive drugs are effective. Pay attention to what your body is telling you, listen to your doctor’s advice and use your own discernment when taking any medication.

Trust in the body’s natural ability to heal, and do your part to promote personal health and wellness naturally. As the book of Jeremiah (17:14) says: ‘Heal me and I shall be healed’.
