Jumping for joy as riders defy filthy weather

The Cayman Island’s Equestrian Federation visited Jamaica for the last leg of the Caribbean Equestrian Association Junior Jumping Competition.

It was held on Saturday and Cayman’s 14 & Under rider, Ashley Scaletta, and 16 & Under rider, Alex Kennett, competed against Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago.

One rider in each category from each country competed in four rounds of intense timed jumping.

Hurricane Paloma had only just left Grand Cayman and the Jamaica show committee kept a close eye on the news hoping the storm would not affect the show.

After two rounds of jumping under cloudy skies, the rainy effects of the outer bands of Hurricane Paloma looked like it was going to stop proceedings.

A decision was made to continue with riders jumping the last two rounds in pouring rain. The excellent sand arena was safe, and the children did not want to delay the show.

Kennett gave an incredible performance with four clear rounds in good time with no faults.

Scaletta attending her first CEA Junior Jumping Competition did very well with two clear rounds and two rounds with four faults in each round and two time faults.

Cayman finished with only 10 faults in total. Barbados had four faults, Jamaica had 27 faults and Trinidad had 33 faults. Cayman came in second for their best CEA Junior Jumping Competition show for the year.
