Poll: Most news is retrieved online

Almost two thirds of respondents to the most recent caycompass.com online poll said their primary source of local news is obtained from online websites.

The results were somewhat to be expected because the poll was conducted online. Several respondents pointed out this fact.

‘You’re having a survey available only online and asking people what their primary source of local news is,’ said one person. ‘What do you think the results are going to be?’

Of the 455 respondents, 296 (65.1 per cent) said they got their local news online.

‘I read both the Compass and Net News online,’ said one person. ‘It’s free and doesn’t leave ink all over your hands.’

‘From the Compass website,’ said another person. ‘Everyone here uses it online.’

The second highest group of respondents – 75 people or 16.5 per cent of the total – said their main source of local news was print newspapers.

Thirty-two people said their primary source of local news was radio.

‘Most of the newspaper articles are just printed from old news,’ said one person.

‘Radio Cayman, of course,’ said another person.

Only 25 people (5.5 per cent of the respondents) said their primary source of local news was television. One of those people said they got their local news from Fox News, apparently indicating they lived overseas.

Eleven people said their primary source of news was email alerts and two people said ‘other’.

‘Normally online, but during hurricanes, the radio,’ said one respondent.
