Recently, the winner of the 2008 Condé Nast Traveler’s Essay Competition was announced.

In May of this year, the Department of Tourism asked local students to showcase their writing talents by participating in the competition.

Rachel Boyd-Moss, of Cayman Prep and High School, was selected by Condé Nast Traveler to be the Cayman Islands essay finalist in this year’s competition.

The assignment was to write an essay on the topic: If you could share a secret about your island with someone visiting for the first time, what would it be?

The aim of the annual competition is to educate Caribbean school children about the importance of tourism to their country’s economy.

Rachel’s essay was about Barkers National Park.

Rachel’s essay was then re-judged against 23 region finalists at the recent CTO Conference held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

While Rachel did not place in the top three spots at the competition, she stated that the experience was still memorable.

“As I was handed my certificate I felt an overwhelming burst of pride to be representing Cayman in a competition as special as this one,” she said.

The four other local semi-finalists in this year’s competition were Codi Whittaker from St. Ignatius Catholic School, and Joel Gayle, Nadine Hurlstone and Leshontae Missick from Creek & Spot Bay Primary School.
