Cayman Brac
Having lain dormant for over two years, Divi Tiara Beach Resort on Cayman Brac is being put to good use by housing crews working to restore the hurricane damaged island.
Divi Tiara, which was closed down two years ago by its owners Divi Resorts, will house contractors and workers who are repairing the damage done by Hurricane Paloma on 8 November.
‘Divi Tiara, which has been an eyesore for us for a couple of years now, in its own way is becoming a God-send,’ said Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbbetts at Thursday’s post-Cabinet Press Briefing.
‘The owners of the property met with representatives from my Ministry two days ago and they have agreed to allow us to utilise the two buildings which are on the eastern section of the property,’ he said.
‘They have some damage which is …almost superficial, so they are easily able to be made liveable. McAlpine Ltd. has kindly stepped up to the plate, and they have agreed to do the restoration of those two buildings, to provide the labour free of cost, and they will do so as swiftly as materials can be sourced.’
A press release noted that Divi Resorts offered the rooms to the government on a complimentary basis and that it was to begin accommodating workers last week. The hotel units were among the few on the island spared in the recent Category 4 storm.
Mr. Tibbetts said he saw a draft agreement of the owners allowing the Government to use the building Wednesday night.
‘They will do it in three months increments, allow us the use of it. I’m pretty certain we’ll be able to house 60 to 70 workers at a time up there. So that will help us tremendously with accommodations.’
E.J. Schanfarber, president of Divi Hotels Inc., said, ‘Luckily, Divi’s property survived the hurricane relatively unscathed and so we are very fortunate and happy to be able to assist Cayman Brac get ready for island visitors again.’
