The U19 Girls Basketball League is near the end of its regular season.
Catherine Ebanks leads the league in scoring |
The league saw one of its last games on Saturday night at the Digicel Court on Eastern Avenue.
At 6:30pm the Comets, led in large part by Felecia Connor, took on Abigail Stoddard and the Sparks while at 8:15pm Colin and Dionne Anglin led their Monarchs against Lloyd Samuels and his Lynx.
The playoffs for the league are set to start on Saturday 6 December. This will consist of two semi-final games on the day involving all four teams.
The league final is expected to occur the following Saturday 13 December.
There have been rainouts and various cancelled games throughout the season and it is not certain at press time if those games will be played.
Nevertheless, the playoffs are around the corner and promise to be as tight as the games seen thus far in the competition.
Heading into last weekend Sparks and Monarchs were the frontrunners of the league.
Sparks were on the top of the table with 10 points, winning most of their games by outscoring their opponents 164-148.
Kimberly Pitta has been leading the way for the Sparks averaging a double-double with 10.2 points and 13.8 rebounds per game.
She has had plenty of help from Courtisha Ebanks, who also averages a double-double chipping in 10 points and 10 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile the Monarchs have won with solid defense, leading the league in fewest points allowed with 112 thus far.
Christsania McLean has been a force on offense. She is second in the league in scoring averaging 12.5 points per game.
McLean has also done well on the glass hauling down roughly 12 rebounds per game.
April Ebanks has been a great help for McLean chipping in 9.3 points and 13 rebounds per game.
Playing catch-up were the Lynx and the Comets. To no surprise both have allowed the most points during the season with 166 and 198 respectively.
The Lynx though boast Catherine Ebanks who leads the league in scoring and assists. Ebanks averages 14.7 points and 3.3 assists per game.
Comets may be struggling but have a huge bright spot in Felecia Connor. She is third in the league in scoring averaging 11.3 points per game.
As it currently stands the playoffs would see Sparks against Comets and Monarchs taking on Lynx in the semi-finals.
It would be interesting to see in both games if trends seen throughout the season continue.
Sparks have been in good shape against the Comets when keeping them under 30 points. The key has been getting Stoddard scoring over 10 points while Pitta and Ebanks take care of the rebounding.
Monarchs and Lynx always seem to have a grind-out defensive game. The winner has always been the team that takes care of the ball the best.
