Vaughan must get runs

Michael Vaughan must begin next summer with a blaze of runs to have any chance of facing the Aussies.

The former skipper’s only route back to the England team is to show prolific form with Yorkshire in the opening weeks of the season.

It follows the decision to omit him from England’s tour of West Indies and also from the performance squad trip to New Zealand.

Instead, Vaughan will fly with Yorkshire to Abu Dhabi in March in the hope he can find some inspiration.

National selector Geoff Miller said: ‘There must be justification for including players and, since Michael’s problems last year when he gave up the captaincy, there have not been many runs.

‘We know what he can do. He has a central contract and is in our plans. Michael will go with Yorkshire to Abu Dhabi for pre-season training and start pushing for selection next year.’

Vaughan retired as England skipper in tears on August 3 and played only four more innings for Yorkshire – scoring 10, 0, 19 and 14. In Tests he has 134 runs in his last eight innings.

Yet skipper Kevin Pietersen would have welcomed him back as much for his leadership advice as batting.

Though KP was praised for taking his team back to India following the Mumbai massacre, he sometimes struggled tactically on the field, especially in India’s successful 387-run chase in the First Test.

Vaughan’s exclusion – revealed in SunSport yesterday – means Ian Bell and Owais Shah will fight for the No 3 berth in the Caribbean.

The 16-man squad for the four Tests contains uncapped Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid and fit-again swing bowler Ryan Sidebottom.

Rashid, 20, said: ‘Any England thing is a big deal and hopefully I can do well.’

Few changes were made to the one-day squad despite their 5-0 thrashing in India. Dimi Mascarenhas returns for Luke Wright in a like-for-like change while Worcestershire keeper Stephen Davies is elevated for the first time in place of Tim Ambrose.

TEST SQUAD: Pietersen (capt), Ambrose, James Anderson, Bell, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Andrew Flintoff, Stephen Harmison, Monty Panesar, Matt Prior, Rashid. Shah, Sidebottom, Andrew Strauss, Graeme Swann.

ONE-DAY SQUAD: Pietersen (capt), Anderson, Bell, Ravi Bopara, Broad, Collingwood, Steven Davies, Flintoff, Harmison, Mascarenhas, Samit Patel, Prior, Shah, Swann, Sidebottom.
