The big fight is on! Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker will get the world title shot he has been striving for since first lacing on the gloves over 20 years ago.
Whittaker will challenge Vernon ‘The Viper’ Forrest for the American’s World Boxing Council’s light-middleweight belt in the Cayman Islands probably the last weekend in April, possibly at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Minister of Tourism, Charles Clifford, said in a statement: ‘The Ministries of Tourism and Sport are jointly reviewing a proposal from a boxing promoter to stage a world championship fight in Cayman that would involve our very own Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker.
‘This would be another live televised broadcast from the Cayman Islands on one of the major networks with promotional footage of the Cayman Islands.
‘We are meeting the promoter this week and will update the public as negotiations progress.’
Gary Shaw, the champ’s promoter, is expected to arrive on Thursday for meetings with Mr Clifford and Minister of Sports Alden McLaughlin.
Forrest, 38 next month, is one of the most respected world champions in the sport but Whittaker, 35, believes with home advantage he can snatch the most coveted of all the world organisations.
‘It is my strong belief that I can be victorious,’ he said. ‘I want to thank Ministers Charles Clifford and Alden McLaughlin and the whole Cayman Islands government for giving me this opportunity.’
