Uniformed law enforcement officers are on the search for James Orville Ebanks, a remand prisoner who escaped from HMP Northward.
Ebanks is 47 years old. He is 5 10 tall, of slim build, and has dark brown eyes; short dark brown hair; and no facial hair. If he is seen, he should not be approached, prison officials said. Instead, members of the public are urged to call 911 to report any possible sightings.
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is working with prison officers to apprehend the escapee. Residents are advised that Ebanks has a past conviction for boat theft. Boat owners should therefore ensure that their boats are secured, and report any missing vessels to police.
Ebanks was found to be missing late this morning during the 11:30 a.m. lunch break head count. Prison officials say he apparently used an instrument to cut through the bars of his cell window, and then cut through the prison fence, making his escape. One prison officer has been suspended in connection with the incident.
Ebanks was last known to be wearing a Northward uniform of a light blue shirt and light blue trousers. His most recent address before Northward was Birch Tree Hill, West Bay.
Commissioner of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Dr William Rattray, cautioned the public to not approach Ebanks but encouraged them to provide any information that could assist Police by calling 911. An internal prison investigation has already begun into the circumstances of the escape, he noted.
