Football fans were treated to a fine match on Sunday night at the T.E. McField Sports Complex (Annex Field) with Cayman Under-23 national side squaring up against a fearsome Cayman Select team.
Cayman Select was put together by Lee Ramoon and Arden ‘Cheeky’ Rivers and the match was a fundraiser towards helping the youngsters participating in next month’s AC Milan Continental Cup in Cleveland, Ohio.
Cayman Select fielded 10 current senior national players and seven ex-national players. It was well balanced with youth and experience.
The night was filled with stars as Cayman Select brought out Lee Ramoon, Arden ‘Cheeky’ Rivers, Garth Anderson, Neil Murray, Vergil Seymour and Clay Coleman.
The U-23 side was in for a big challenge with such a strong, talented and experienced team in front of them.
They stood strong and attacked the giants of the Select Team and stood toe to toe for the start of the game until a loss of concentration saw Calvin Jefford score.
The U-23s later showed their true colours after some instructions from head coach Ernie ‘Gillie’ Seymour.
James Ebanks escaped loose for the U-23 team and fired a shoot which beat the experienced Clay Coleman who has been between the sticks for Cayman for many years.
The game saw a host of other chances for the U-23 side who were constantly in front of the Select team’s goal but unable to find the net.
It was Jefford again to the rescue as a mistimed tackle left him with enough time in front of the U-23 goal to slot home his second of the night to make it 2-1.
The U-23 was down but not totally out and stuck together to get that tying goal back but ran out of time.
Supporters are invited to return on Saturday 13 June for another fund raiser. It’s a six-a-side football tournament, open to men and women. Send e-mail to [email protected] for more details. It will be played at the T.E. McField Sports Complex (Annex Field).
