In what has been a rare event in a so far quiet 2009 Hurricane Season, Grand Cayman was hit with a major downpour late Sunday night and into early Monday morning.
The National Weather Service recorded 6.52 inches of rain falling during the overnight period between Sunday and Monday. Another two to four inches were thought to be possible through today.
The service indicated a stationary front that had stalled out over Cayman was the culprit. The front was interacting with a tropical wave in the area.
Forecasters warned residents to expect additional flooding in low lying areas, like the one pictured here behind Jose’s Esso in George Town. At press time Monday, there had been no reports of homes being flooded.
