Employees from dms Organization Ltd
and its affiliate and subsidiary companies volunteered as advisors to the 18
students in the “Beyond Ideas” Junior Achievement group.
It is the fourth successive year dms
has supported the Junior Achievement company programme through which students
simulate a real business. They gain insight into operations like raising
capital, electing officers, and developing, selling and marketing a product.
The programme commenced in
mid-October 2009 and came to a close on 17 March, with advisors and students
meeting weekly at dms House.
“Investing in the youth of our
country is a commitment dms regards as of paramount importance and each year we
continue to be impressed with our students’ work ethic,” said dms Manager and
JA Lead Advisor Sarah Lacey.
“They demonstrated tremendous
motivation in taking on the responsibility of two products and were successful
in executing their business plans.”
Beyond Ideas first produced Muy
picanté kits which contained the ingredients and instructions for growing one’s
own onions, bell peppers and tomatoes, complete with a salsa recipe.
Their second business endeavour was
My First Garden and they targeted their sales at young people aspiring to grow,
nourish and take pride in their own mini gardens. The packages contained soil
and a mixture of flower seeds.
“On behalf of our group, we have each learned
so much about what is involved in running a business – we have gone through
each of the stages, and it really has been so helpful in providing us with the
skills and insight that will benefit us in the future,” said Beyond Ideas president
“Thank you to dms for leading our
group – I actually completed my high school work experience programme at dms
last year, so it was great to return and see familiar faces!”
In addition to the mentorship
received, the students also learned about career opportunities at dms which has
already hired a number of previous Junior Achievement students.
Most recently former JA Company
President Monique Williams joined dms affiliate Offshore Business Solutions as
an administrative assistant. Former JA student Francesca Hamann joined dms upon
graduating from John Gray High School – where she discovered her passion for
web design. As dms’ 2008 and 2009 scholarship recipient, she is currently
pursuing a degree in the field, returning to dms to work each summer, and upon
earning her designation – will formally rejoin the dms team.
