Thirteen seats on the board were
open and they represent different sectors of the Islands’
tourism community. These include hotel, condos, watersports, transportation and
restaurants plus the cruise and allied sector which represents businesses that
are directly or indirectly supported by tourism. This includes retailers,
developers and wholesalers.
“When one stops to think about it
there are very few businesses on the Island that are not supported by tourism
in one way or another as tourism is one of the two economic pillars of the
Cayman Islands. With the economic
forecast still set for mediocre it is important now more then ever before to
unite and come together to support our common goals in this industry,” said Executive
Director Trina Christian.
CITA lobbies the government on
behalf of the private sector and works with the Department of Tourism to
support various initiatives and training programmes.
This year, there will be two
significant departures from the board of directors. Karie Bergstrom will be
stepping aside from the Cayman Islands Tourism Association to take over as the
chairman of the Tourism Advisory Council and Stephen Broadbelt is leaving the
president’s post after two years in the hot seat.
“CITA’s Board of Directors has
always been strong leaders in the community and their businesses. They come in
as an expert in their sector of the industry and bring valuable knowledge to
the table from years of experience.
“The board sets goals for the year
ahead and focal points with government such as safety, air arrivals and increasing
the value and ROI from CI government’s marketing dollars,” explained Ms
