Independent BVI law firm, Forbes
Hare, has opened an office in the Cayman Islands. Corporate partner José Santos
explained that “as many of our clients have business interests in both jurisdictions
and – with an increasing number of offshore Caribbean practitioners being
qualified in both – it was an obvious step for the firm to take”.
While the firm has no ambition to
present in every offshore jurisdiction, the synergies between the BVI and
Cayman were too strong to ignore, he added.
Mr. Santos noted a significant
increase in the firm’s transactional workflow since the spring of 2009 and a
general increase in corporate and commercial activity in certain markets.
“In offering BVI and Cayman Islands
legal services on a dual-jurisdictional basis, we feel that we are well placed
to service the needs of existing and new clients in two of the world’s leading
offshore centres,” Mr. Santos said.
The Cayman Islands office will
initially be headed by corporate and commercial partner Barry Smith.
