Matthew Courtis is one of the most
talented young sportsmen on the island.
That was evident when the
14-year-old went to England recently to competed in England. A regular
triathlete he also excels in sailing.
The Great Britain Pentathlon Association
held the British schools modern biathlon (swimming and running) championships,
with schools from all over the country being represented.
Courtis competed for his school
Kelly College at the South West qualifiers held at Millfield in Somerset in
November 2009. In his age division there were 193 competitors.
With his two teammates Courtis won
their division and along with one other team from the South West were invited
to the finals a month ago in Crystal Palace, south London.
The top 10 teams competed in the
finals and Kelly were the firm favourites.
They went into the final ranked No.1
with 6,384 points, and not to disappoint they won the gold medal.
Courtis was particularly pleased
with his performance, doing better at both the swim and the run in the finals.
