championship game in the second annual Butterfield Co-ed Flag Football League
saw the underdog H2Only upset the favourites Hammerheads 27-22 in a back and
forth nail bitter.
Winners of the initial matchup
earlier in the season, and cruising through the regular season and playoffs, it
was a foregone conclusion that Hammerheads would hold up the trophy once again.
However, it appeared that H2Only ignored the idea of an inevitable result as
they did exactly what they had to do to slow down the potent Hammerheads team
and capture their first championship.
Trailing 14-13 at halftime, H2Only
used a tough defense and a ball control offense to hold the Hammerheads offense
to one score in the second half.
H2Only’s approach of mixing in a
nice balance of run and short intermediate pass plays to control the clock
worked perfectly. Although their offense was slowed, Hammerheads defense
matched H2Only’s intensity and generally kept them a bay.
Leading, 22-19 with three minutes
remaining in the game, Hammerheads forced H2Only into a fourth and long
situation which could have sealed the game for them if they managed to get the
However, an amazing connection
between Kevin Solomon and Perry ‘Bo Wonder’ Levy who leapt over two defenders
to make a spectacular catch put H2Only in a first and goal situation and
propelled life back into the team. Kevin later made an elusive run manoeuvring
around would-be tacklers such as summer league defensive MVP Damien Barboram to
score and give H2Only the lead 27-22 with two minutes remaining on the clock.
This was obviously more than enough
time for Hammerheads to march down the field and score the game winning TD so
H2Only had to dig deep and grind out a crucial stop. As anticipated,
Hammerheads pushed the ball down the field to within the 20 yard line but
that’s as close as they would get as Kevin Solomon made a game breaking INT in
the end zone to negate any chance of Hammerheads repeating as champions.
H2Only got a complete team effort
and kudos to them for employing a solid game plan. Solomon was again a pillar
of strength in the backfield as he was cool in leading the H2Only offense.
He finished the game with two
passing TDs, one rushing TD and the game winning interception. The Boy Wonder was
his favourite target all night with eight receptions and two reception
Tds. However, many believe the difference
maker of the game and entire playoffs was newbie Jamie Wilson whose excellent
pass rush and speed allowed H2Only defense to be disruptive and formidable.
Jordana Clarke led the charge for
the females with a number of big receptions and passes throughout the game.
Rachelle Peterson and Jessica Kong rounded out the offense for H2Only with a
couple of receptions and runs as well.
Defensively the women were led by
summer league defensive MVP Malaqui Awe and fellow sidekick Isatou Sey who both
kept the Hammerheads females in check throughout.
For Hammerheads, Bobeth O’Garro led
the charge and was sensational for the majority of the night with three TD
passes and a number of nice runs. Unfortunately her costly INT turnover with
just over a minute remaining in the game sealed Hammerheads fate. Ranford Welcome,
Andrew Wisdom and Hong Nyugen each caught one Td to round out the scoring for
Hammerheads who will have to wait until next year to avenge their heartbreaking
