More than a hundred hotels in the pipeline

There are 133 hotels in various
phases of being built in the joint Caribbean and Mexico region, according to a
new report.

The document was developed by Smith
Travel Research in conjunction with Torto Wheaton Research and Dodge Construction
and notes that in total there are 17,018 rooms in the active pipeline. This
includes projects in construction, final planning and planning phases. More
than 50 per cent of the new rooms are being developed in the segment of
midscale without food & beverage and upscale.

The figures were boosted by
Mexico’s strong standing of an additional 10,852 rooms in the active pipeline.
Of those, 5,336 are actually in construction. The biggest areas were Dominican
Republic with 1,874 and Puerto Rico with 1,445 extra rooms in the pipeline.

The region has 490,067 rooms in the
existing supply and should all projects in the active pipeline come to final
fruition the total would be 507,085.
