Please permit me space in your
paper for an open letter of appreciation to the Lion’s Club of Tropical Gardens
for all their wonderful ways of touching people’s lives in one way or
I was one of the winners for the
Cancer Survivor’s Cruise on Carnival Freedom. When I received the phone call
advising me that my name was one of the lucky winners, I could hardly believe
my ears! My first thought was that it would be impossible because one of the
caregivers for my disabled adult son had just left on vacation and I wasn’t
sure if I could find someone else in such a short time.
After a quick prayer and discussion
with my family and a dear friend, Susan Whittaker who immediately said she
would stay with my son, my husband and I made the decision to go.
Eight years ago, my husband and I
were planning a cruise for our family when he was diagnosed with cancer. The
following year, six months after his last treatment, I was diagnosed with
cancer. The year after, we lost our house to Hurricane Ivan.
A cruise seemed completely out of
the question anytime in the near future, so when the opportunity came through
the Lion’s Club, words are inadequate to express how happy we were. It was
quite the experience to meet so many cancer survivors, hear so many stories of
survival, and see the joy on everyone’s face knowing that we weren’t just
“cancer survivor’s”, but “Thriver’s”.
Cancer is a life changing
experience but so is thriving.
Thank God for the doctors, nurses
and all who work so hard to help us through this dreaded disease. And thank God
for clubs such as the Lion’s who help dreams come true.
