NBA superstar Vince Carter was the
prime attraction at last week’s Orlando Magic basketball camp on Grand Cayman.
Put on by the Cayman Islands
Basketball Association, some 70 kids ages 7-17 showed up over five days at the
Arts and Recreation Centre at Camana Bay for a mix of drills and exhibition
Leading the kids were seven coaches
from South Florida. Some were in Cayman for the second time, following last
year’s inaugural camp. The others were new to the island and brought with them
a vast level of playing experience, mostly in Division One American
For many youngsters the highlight
was seeing Carter on the last two days of the camp. The Olympic Gold medallist
and slam-dunk maestro spoke to the children primarily about the need to have a
goal in life and keep developing in basketball.
A select group of youngsters were
honoured with Magic memorabilia for various accomplishments. Among the goodies
were official Orlando Magic jerseys, Vince Carter posters and even a Vince
Carter basketball shoe.
