Scholars International Football
Club is giving back to the sport’s local community in a big way with the 2010
version of the annual Scholars Classic. The tournament kicked off on Wednesay
at the Ed Bush Stadium between the Cayman National side and a Jamaica Select. A
Cayman Select played Honduras Select on Thursday.
Scholars player Nikolai Hill said:
“We’ve organised all the best players based here in the Cayman Islands from
Honduras, Jamaica and Cayman and put them into separate teams. We’re playing a
round robin tournament involving the Cayman national team and the Under-23s to
create four teams.”
The series of matches will finish
on 15 August.
Scholars have organised this to help
the national side prepare for the trip to Puerto Rico to play in the Digicel
Caribbean Cup. Those games have been postponed and will now be played from 6
October instead of 18-22 August. The Under-23s are also limbering up for their
World Cup and Olympic qualifiers later in the year.
This tournament is sponsored by
Scholars International and Construction Development Associates. All the matches
are free. There is no entry fee for the teams either.
