Fellas have to wait for mix-up

Local netball hopes to see record
participation in its upcoming mixed league and as a result the start of the
competition has been pushed back.

The
2010 Cayman Islands Netball Association Mixed League is slated to start
Saturday 4 September. The original start date was scheduled for Saturday 28
August. Netball association press officer Orvin Palacio states the decision to
delay the league start is based on a desire to get more of the public involved.

“We’re extending our registration
deadline to Friday 20 August and our league start to September. We’re simply
looking to accommodate more teams. We want to see new teams and players.
Personally I’d like to see the corporate division come out in force and enjoy
itself. We’re expecting people will try out the corporate division as a new
form of leisure activity. From there we can see the division becoming a mix of
leisurely fun and competition. We know the clubs will be intense so we’re not
touching that too much.”

This
year’s league has a number of new quirks. For starters action is slated to be
split into two sections: corporate and club. The corporate segment appeals to
local companies and people who are new to the sport. The club section is geared
to the established local teams and is being billed as a warm-up for the
national women’s league which starts this fall.

Spaces are still open for new
players and teams. Registration is CI$25 per player with each team allowed to
have a maximum of 15 players on the roster. The deadline for registration is
Friday 20 August, 2010.
