An 18-year-old woman has been charged and was expected to appear in court Tuesday in connection with a fatal car accident in August.

About 12.30 a.m. on Tuesday, 3 August 2010, police received a report of a two vehicle collision on the Harquail Bypass near Lakeside Condos.

The 24-year-old passenger in one of the vehicles, FederAnn Faustino, sustained serious injuries and later died at the Cayman Islands Hospital, George Town.

According to police, the driver of the Honda Civic Ms Faustino rode in is no longer being investigated in connection with the accident.

“Our enquiries in relation to the driver of the (Honda) are complete and no charges have been brought,” a police spokesperson confirmed late Tuesday.

The 18-year-old female driver of the other vehicle, Brooke Nowak, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Ms Nowak was formally charged Monday in connection with the incident. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and with causing death by dangerous driving.

The 18-year-old appeared in court Tuesday morning before Magistrate Nova Hall.

She was ordered to remain in the jurisdiction at least until the setting of her next court date on 29 September.

John Furniss, representing Ms Nowak, requested that she be allowed to leave to attend university. Magistrate Hall denied that request.

Court charges indicated that Ms Nowak’s blood alcohol level was measured at 0.180 following the 3 August accident. The legal limit in the Cayman Islands is 0.100.
