The Tower Run in Camana Bay
benefiting Special Olympics Cayman Islands is on this weekend.
It is on Saturday and the second
annual staging. It goes from outside the Discovery Centre on The Paseo and Jo
Gammage of organisers Dart Realty is really looking forward to it. Hopefully,
the weather won’t be too bad. She said: “This exciting 2.14 mile race around
Camana Bay ends with a sprint finish up and down The Observation Tower, and
this year we’ve added a special kids’ dash down Market Street.”
Mark Browne won the inaugural race,
over 1.2 miles, last year in a time of 7 minutes 42 seconds. It was a sprint
finish as Dave Walker pushed him all the way to finish only two seconds behind.
Third place went to Martin Davies, who just nipped ahead of Marlon Crowe – 7:56
Top honours for the women went to
Avril O’Reilly in 9:00.88, a short distance in front of Emily Davies, Martin’s
sister, who clocked 9:05.91. Laura Knox took the third spot, with Tracey Walker
not far back.
Race day registration is from 6am
and there is a pre-race warm-up with Anytime Fitness from 6.45am. The race
starts at 7am and there’s a kids’ dash down Market Street (ages 10 and under)
Gammage added: “Anytime Fitness
will have free body composition testing and get participants energised with a
great warm-up. Post race beverages will be available thanks to Café del Sol and
CI$10 entry fee with 100 per cent
of proceeds going to the Special Olympics Cayman Islands. First 300 adults and
200 kids will receive a free Tower Run t-shirt.
