Radiation oncologist Oscar Tercilla
visited Cayman this month to deliver presentations on radiation treatments.
Dr. Tercilla, a board-certified
radiation oncologist, is the medical director of the Doral Oncology Centre in Doral,
Florida. The centre offers a wide range of radiation oncology services,
management of complex cancer cases and individualised patient care.
The Cayman Islands Cancer Society
in conjunction with the Oncology Referral Network of America hosted Dr. Tercilla’s
visit from 12 to 15 October.
“Even though radiation treatment
can significantly reduce the chance of recurrence, it often isn’t presented as
an option to breast (and other) cancer patients after their surgeries,” said Maria Freed, managing partner of Oncology Referral Network of America.
“Like surgery and chemotherapy, it
is an important adjunct modality in some cases, because the tumour bed can be
targeted with low dose radiation, therefore increasing the likelihood that all
tumour cells have been eradicated,” she said.
Dr. Tercilla presented a CME
lecture for medical professionals at the Cayman Islands Hospital and was one of
two doctors who presented at the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens’ district
awareness meeting at the John A. Cumber Primary School Hall in West Bay.
He held discussions on when
radiation is appropriate and when it is not, addressed the fear and concern
regarding radiation and dispelled the many myths surrounding this treatment
