Reading is Cool welcomes new students

Twelve primary school children have
been selected to participate in Reading is Cool campaign for this school year,
launched by the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens Early Childhood and Youth
Committee.

The Reading is Cool programme,
which began in 2006, addresses deficiencies in reading at the primary level.
Once a month on a Saturday morning, members from the Lions Club pick up the
children who have been chosen to participate and take them on a reading
adventure.

Committee chair Winsome Parker
said: “The workbooks have been upgraded and designed to meet the needs of
several areas of reading weaknesses and challenges.

As a teacher, Ms Winsome recognises
the reading challenges the children face. She believes that “every child will
improve by the end of this year’s campaign in nine months time”.

This year at each workshop the
children will be served breakfast and then will participate in interactive
reading sessions and sessions with guest speakers on various topics, as well as
fun and games.
