Budding writers Ruth Harris, 9, of
George Town Primary School and Ashley Wood, 14, of Cayman Islands International
School recently represented the Cayman Islands in the Florida-Caribbean Cruise
Association’s Essay Competition, aimed at promoting cruise tourism awareness
among Caribbean youth.
The annual competition is sponsored
by the FCCA and the various Ministries of Tourism and Education within the
Caribbean region and, this year, the topic of the competition was What can my
destination do to become more competitive in the Global Tourism Market?
Of the 27 entries, the two young
Caymanians were selected by local judges as the winners for the Cayman Islands.
Their winning essays were submitted to the FCCA to represent the Cayman Islands
amongst other representing young scholars from the Caribbean region.
“It is apparent by their
suggestions that the calibre of Ruth and Ashley’s work was extraordinarily
well-thought out and creative,” said Dianne Conolly, coordinator, tourism
training and development.
