Summer camps were a success

By sponsoring 15 summer camps this
past summer, the Ministry of Sports has once again shown how committed it is to
supporting children in sports. That meant that over 1,300 children on Grand
Cayman and Cayman Brac received free coaching in netball, cricket, football,
athletics, swimming and basketball camps.

Minister of Sports Mark Scotland
said: “My ministry’s summer camp initiative remains one of our key programmes
and every year we try to expand it. The benefits are numerous, especially
providing students with constructive activities and giving parents the peace of
mind of knowing that their children are both safe and active. I sincerely thank
all the local private sector sponsors and volunteers who enable us to run this
programme annually.”

Although sponsored by the Sports
Ministry and implemented by the Department of Sports, the programme was a combined
effort between the public and private sectors.

Acting Director of Sports Collin
Anglin said: “The summer camp programme was a great success. It taught students
new skills, advanced existing ones, created new friendships and improved our
young people’s health.

“Furthermore, every
year we are blessed by having many volunteer coaches and sponsors stepping up
to the plate. Herein lies one of the best things about our camps – they bring
the community together in taking care of our students through the summer.”
