Welds Breezed round easily

The Breeze Fusion fun run and walk
was another huge success thanks to the sterling efforts of everybody at Radio
Cayman who worked tirelessly in recent weeks to make sure there was a good turnout.

Over 70 covered the loop from
Cayman Prep School, up Walkers Road, right on to South Church Street and back
through Denham Thompson Way on Saturday and although the numbers were not enormous
because there were other runs and events going on over the weekend, two worthy
charities benefited from funds raised. They were the National Council for
Voluntary Organisations and the Lions’ Club of Grand Cayman Children’s
Christmas Social.

It was the fourth annual Breeze
Fusion Two Mile Walk/Run and was open to all comers, sporty types or not. They
certainly came in all shapes and sizes and included the four-legged variety
too. Organised by Radio Cayman and also Breeze FM and The Phoenix Athletic
Club, the weather, for once was on their side. In case anyone needed a pre-race
boost, the Red Bull girls were there handing cans of the energiser.

The race was guaranteed a new
champion in both genders because David Walker and Beth Schreader were not in it
this year. Triathlon specialist Ray Welds won in 11 minutes 47 seconds. It was
a handy event as part of his preparations for the Cayman half-marathon on 5
December and possibly a defence of his triathlon short distance victory from
last year. The Cayman Triathlon is on 28 November. Welds is keeping rival triathletes
guessing on whether he will do that one again or not because his swimming has
not been up to par.

Welds won comfortably, followed by
Verse Manjattan in 12:14. Jon Winson was third four seconds later with Brent
Durkson fourth and Mark Soto fifth. First female home was Tiffany Cole who is
only 14 who ran 13:37. She attends John Gray High School and is a member of the
Hy-Tech Tigers track club she has ambitions of emulating Cydonie Mothersill as
a middle distance runner. Tracey Walker was seventh in 13:59 and third female
home was Haley Bubb in 15:34 in 11th overall place.

Governor Duncan Taylor was tenth,
boxer Charles ‘The Killa’ Whittaker was 15th and a newly fit and trim Rolston
Anglin, the education minister, was 17th. Plenty of Radio Cayman staff ran, including
Nikolai Hill who was 18th and Kathy Miller, 28th. First stroller was Mark
Pessoa and baby Mariq and there were many walkers and dogs.
