Pirates Week recently saw its official end on Grand Cayman and one of the sporting events that helped send it out was the Mike Lockwood Memorial swim meet.
Over the course of three days dozens of local swimmers graced the waters at the Lions Aquatic Pool in George Town. A number of notable names on the local swim scene were present from male torpedoes Geoffrey Butler and Andrew Smilley to female super strokers Lara Butler and Danielle Booth. Most of the competitors belong to event organizers the Stingray Swim Club.
The event saw competition across a number of categories and age groups. With the six and under and 13 and over segments dealing with 50m breaststrokes to 200m Individual Medleys the youngsters swam the gamut of possible events.
Overseeing it all was the staff at the Lions Pool including Paula Swaby and national swim coach Dominic Ross. Both got help from Stingray Swim Club supporters like Penny McDowell and Tom McCallum.
At press time the full results were not available. However a number of youngsters swam well. In addition to more established names like Seiji Groome and Coral Tomascik a number of kids grabbed props such as Brandon Williams and Zororo Mutomba. All in all the youngsters were in good spirits and kept in mind the real goal of the meet: to have fun.
