Rob’s Cherry Cup props

Local hockey crowned its new champions last weekend and the Cherry Cup holders are fresh entries to the record books.

The Islanders won Cayman’s roller hockey championship over the Budget Beavers. The Logic arena of Kings Sports Centre saw the likes of Rob Rintoul out-skate Mark Missal and company over three matches in the best-of-three series.

Game one went to the Islanders 10-7 before Budget forced a third encounter after a 5-4 over-time victory in game two. Game three would go to the Islanders via an 8-6 final score.

For the Islanders the second time on the big stage proved to be a charm. Last season the side erased memories of numerous mediocre campaigns by advancing to the finals before losing to the Barracudas.

This season’s title run was an unexpected one during a season of significant upheaval.

The club lost a key player in Ben Rivard and added relatively unknown hockey players such as Rintoul. The side took awhile to establish chemistry and had a forgettable regular season slate as they finished last in the standings and were not that impressive in most stats.

Budget’s loss is a major one on a number of levels. On one hand the Beavers are the only side left to have not won a championship. On the other hand the side saw its star goalie move back home.
