Two local triathletes used their fitness for a good cause recently, raising money for Meals on Wheels.
Paul Drake of Genesis Trust & Corporate Services Ltd and Pam Travers of SteppingStones Recruitment Ltd presented a cheque for US$8,000 to Meals on Wheels Director Beulah McField, and Chairman Rosaline Jamieson.
Mr. Drake and Ms Travers raised the funds through being sponsored by friends and family to complete the Rohto Ironman 70.3 Miami, which took place in downtown Miami at the end of last year. They both successfully completed the gruelling course comprised of a 1.2 mile swim, followed by a 56 mile bike and then ending with a 13.1 mile run, and were joined in their success by Cayman athletes Caroline Cahill and Dave Bennett.
“At the start of the event I was very nervous,” said Ms Travers, a regular competitor in local triathlons, cycling, swimming and running events. “I think there were just so many competitors and so much to think about that it all felt a bit overwhelming. As soon as I got to the entry point for the swim my nerves left me and I started to focus on what I needed to do. I didn’t want to let myself or my sponsors down and was determined to raise as much as I could for Meals on Wheels. I actually enjoyed the whole experience and I’d definitely do it again.”
Mr. Drake, who is another well known athlete on the local circuit and also a director of Meals on Wheels, was very pleased with the level of support he and Ms Travers received.
“We would like to thank all those who supported us and Meals on Wheels with their generous donations and sponsorship, especially Genesis Trust & Corporate Services Ltd, which was kind enough to match the funds I raised,” he said.
“We are delighted to be able to help Meals on Wheels which provides such a vital service in the local community.”
