One of Cayman’s favourite cycling events, the Reefathlon, makes its return on Sunday. The event, which starts from the Reef Resort in East End, sees cyclists take on between one and three loops of the 19-mile Reefathlon circuit.
The event will start with a one loop social ride completed at a manageable pace, which will present newcomers to the sport with the ideal opportunity to get to know fellow cycling enthusiast. They also get to ride with some of the top cyclists on Island and get to pick their brains on all things related to the sport.
The second and third laps will be conducted at race pace, with positions in the ladies and junior category being decided at the end of the second lap, with the senior men and masters sprinting for the line at the end of the third lap. However, all participants are free to complete as many laps as they want. Division winners will win a certificate for a free one night stay at the Reef Resort for two.
After the ride there will be a breakfast for participants, and part of the entry fee will go towards the Cayman Islands Cancer Society. Participants will also receive a Reefathlon tech shirt and a LiveStrong band. All participating cyclists are required to wear helmets as well as the race numbers provided by the organisers.
For those who do not feel like driving out to East End on race day, the Reef Resort is also offering a staycation special for the evening before the event for $155, excluding service charge, for a beach front studio suite for two, including one race entry.
Entry for the event is available on www.reefathlon.com, or on the morning of the race. Race entries are $15 for pre-entries or $20 on race day. Registration is from 6.10-6.40am at the resort, with the start set for 7am.
