Kids young and old and sweet-minded souls may very well be smiling on Tuesday, 22 February.
That’s when Dylan Lauren, mega-successful founder of Dylan’s Candy Bar and owner of the world’s largest candy collection, comes to Books & Books, Grand Cayman.
“For one night only Books & Books will be transformed into a colourful candy wonderland. Do not miss this special opportunity to sample Dylan’s delectable confections and learn how to create, decorate and celebrate with all things candy,” says Bianca Freeland of Books & Books.
Dylan’s new book, Dylan’s Candy Bar: Unwrap Your Sweet Life, is a riot of colour, fun facts, the history and psychology of sweets and even includes how to decorate with candy. The businesswoman and candy fanatic first opened her own New York City candy shop in 2001 – not that it feels like it, she tells us.
“It feels like yesterday. Over the past 10 years we have been so busy opening more stores and shops and developing products that the time just flies!”
Indeed, such is her success that the media have since dubbed Dylan the Candy Queen.
“A true candy queen incorporates candy into every aspect of life: wearing candy colours, and candy themed fragrances, apparel, accessories et cetera,” beams the New York native.
Dylan, who holds a degree in art history, says the book constituted a very big project and took two years to bring together.
“I am very detail oriented, so I took every word to heart when writing it and I personally created the concepts for the shoots and styled them. I wanted the book to clearly depict my vision of Dylan’s Candy Bar.”
There are obvious questions to ask, although we still feel a little silly about enquiring as to what her favourite sweets are. Still, that never stopped us before, and to Dylan’s credit she takes it in her stride.
“I love red gummies. I love colourful graphics and bright, creative packaging. We develop products that merge fashion, art and pop culture with candy, and we try to sell all different candies so there’s something for everyone.”
And, uh, there’s no other way to say this, but with all those treats around, how does she stay so slim?
“I eat candy in moderation. Just like with everything else in life, it’s all about balance,” Dylan points out sagely.
Everything in moderation, including moderation – and advice.
Dylan will be at Books & Books, Camana Bay on Tuesday, 22 February from 7pm.
