Six months after the launch of its Montevideo office, international offshore law firm Harneys announced the appointment of the firm’s first permanent representative in Brazil.
Brazilian lawyer Maria Pia Buchi, who previously served as in-house counsel at Triscorp Investimentos and Opus Gestao de Recursos, has been appointed to head the firm’s business development in Brazil.
Ms Pia has extensive experience regarding the offshore needs of Brazilian fund managers and businesses.
She will be based in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and focus on developing Harneys’ relationships with clients and the Brazilian business community.
Having previously lived and studied in the United States, Ms Pia will also help to develop key relationships in Miami, New York and other regions of the world where the Latin American market is serviced.
Partner and Head of Harneys Latin America practice Marco Martins said: “I am absolutely delighted that we have succeeded in recruiting someone of Maria Pia’s calibre to help us develop the Brazilian market. … She brings incomparable assets to our team which will greatly enhance our ability to provide a better service to our clients.
This appointment, together with our thriving Montevideo office and our recent hire of Tim Dawson in the Cayman Islands and Henry Mander on the trusts side, will enable us to continue to service clients throughout all of Latin America.
“We have seen strong growth from the region in the past three years and the hiring of Maria Pia will help us continue to develop and grow our share of this exciting market,” he added, noting that the opportunities in Brazil in the next years are going to be “immense”.
