The annual Flowers Mile Sea Swim is Cayman’s biggest sporting event and registration for the 19th staging of this world renowned swim has just opened.
The race is on 18 June and swimmers are encouraged to register early as registration is limited this year to 800 in the swim. Registration can be done by logging on to www.flowersseaswim.com under the register tab. Entry fee is US$30.
Last year’s race boasted over 700 competitors with participants ranging in age from 8 to 80 and range in skill from novices and first-timers to gold medal Olympians and world championship open water specialists from around the globe.
The race is the world’s richest open water event with over $100,000 in cash and random prizes and guaranteed 1-in-5 random prize odds for finishers.
This year, giveaways include round trip tickets on Cayman Airways, Digicel phones, Red Sail Sports activities restaurant vouchers and more.
Trophies are awarded to the top four women’s and top four men’s finishers and each swimmer who finishes the race in the allotted time receives a medal.
The swimmer who breaks the record for the world’s fastest recorded ocean mile will be awarded US$10,000 and US$5,000 will be awarded for setting a new event record.
The men’s world record is 16:00 minutes and the women’s world record is 17 minutes and 21 seconds. The men’s event record is 17:18 mins and the women’s event record is 17:47.
All proceeds from registration are donated to charity. This year’s nominated charity is Meals on Wheels.
As an alternative, the Walk & Watch option allows non-swimmers to participate in the excitement of this charity event.
Walk & Watch is ideal for family members or anyone who wants to be part of a beautiful and exciting day on the beach.
The entry fee is US$20. The first 150 Walkers to check in on race day receive a T-shirt and a US$20 voucher for Cayman Airways.
Both events will start at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman and finish at either Royal Palms or Tiki Beach depending on weather conditions on the day.
