For most of the regular season the Dominos Lady Heels and Home Gas Flames were mediocre.
Now the clubs square off for a shot at glory in local women’s basketball.
The sides are matching up this week in the 2011 national women’s league championship. Both punched their tickets to the final in dramatic sweeps.
Dominos took down the Silver Bullets by scores of 58-42 and 58-28 while Home Gas pulled off a huge upset over the Lady Wolves with results of 63-53 and 61-54.
Dominos were lifted by top scorer Courtisha Ebanks who netted 40 points in the series.
Home Gas meanwhile were guided by a teenage sensation of their own in La-Torae Nixon who had 18 points, five rebounds and five steals in game one and 29 points and eight rebounds in game two.
Interestingly both have been team-mates for a number of seasons in Cayman’s two main youth leagues; namely the PricewaterhouseCoopers Under-16 and Appleby U19 competitions.
On the surface the series is tough to call. Dominos may have the edge in terms of experience as they are the reigning champions and sport four titles in six years.
Home Gas might have more momentum after knocking off a Lady Wolves team that went unbeaten during the regular season.
The Dominos-Home Gas match-up is slated to be a best-of-three series.
Game one was on Wednesday 23 March with game two at 7pm this Sunday 27 March at Camana Bay and if necessary game three would be 8pm on Wednesday 30 March at the University College of the Cayman Islands.
There is also a third place trophy this season, which will be contested by the Wolves and Silver Bullets.
Their best-of-three series saw game one on Wednesday with game two this Sunday at 5pm and if needed game three next Wednesday at 6pm at the same venues.
