Tom’s Nissan runs from A to Z

April will soon be finished but local motorsports enthusiasts are just getting over a autocross event held before the Easter break.

The Cayman Motorsports Association recently staged its monthly Time Attack race. A small field of about 10 drivers took to the Progressive Loop on George Town’s Sparky Drive. Garnering much of the attention was Tom Kirkconnell and his Nissan 350Z.

The Nissan had reportedly been in the works for some two years and was put through its paces for the first time. Made up mostly of carbon-fiber parts, the 350Z was light, agile and powerful. Though it did not produce the best time (84.051 seconds) in the Two Wheel Drive segment, many were impressed with Kirkconnell’s new autocross weapon.

In fact the man to earn most props in the 2WD category would once again be Jimel McLean. Behind the wheel of his Honda Civic hatchback, which is now sprayed gold, McLean would put down a time of 78.022s.

That mark would best Ian Charlery in his Honda Integra Type-R, who had a time of 82.198s.

Arguably the biggest oddity of the meet was the lack of All Wheel Drive competitors. By default Peter Jurgens in the Ace Paint Subaru Impreza would claim the category. The Impreza, which is owned by Keith Tibbetts III, would sport a best time of 77.044s.

There was no lack of racers in the Unlimited division, as six men dodged cones for props. To no surprise Bobby Hulse in the black Toyota Altezza would be the top finisher in a time of 74.082s. He would go on to be the battle round winner in 19.884s.

Two of the more interesting developments were the return of Valvoline Sti and the solid showing of Gary Huggins.

Down for some time undergoing repairs, the Valvoline Subaru Impreza WRX Sti did well in the hands of Keith Tibbetts III and had a best time of 75.480s (good enough for third in the division). Tibbetts III would go on to place second in the battle round (in 20.541s). In spite of being an elder statesman, Huggins continues to show age is just a number when it comes to racing. His steady Kimmar Distributors Ltd Toyota Starlet would place second in the Unlimited class with a 75.323s mark.
