Local author Rick Singer has donated a copy of his latest book to the International College of the Cayman Islands library shortly before the book’s launch in the Cayman Islands this month.
Mr. Singer said he will donate 5 per cent of the sales of Now: Embracing the Present Moment to help rebuild the college library, which was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
“This book is about living in the moment,” said Mr. Singer, who is also an assistant professor in human and social services at the college. “If we live in the moment, we are more able to embrace everything that happens in our lives. I hope readers will be delighted, uplifted, and eager to share the revelations and action steps in this book with other human beings.”
He added: “The reason I decided to donate a percentage of the proceeds to the school is that I am assistant professor there and I believe in their education and their philosophy behind the education. We need a stronger library and available resources for the students as they pursue their degrees.”
College President John Cummings congratulated Mr. Singer on the publication of his third book, saying that in today’s hectic and fast-paced lives, the subject of living in the now is a timely one.
“It is always wonderful when you have a member of faculty who has been dedicated to the college and writes about topics that deal with issues that people can relate to,” said Mr. Cummings. “Working in the now is a very current topic. We always welcome books from talented local authors like Mr. Singer in our library. As many people know, much of our library was destroyed during Ivan and is being reconstructed so we appreciate Mr. Singer’s generosity.”
Now: Embracing the Present Moment comprises 99 reflections touching on courage, fear, success, freedom from the past, gratitude, laughter, choice, desire, the beauty of nature and making peace with suffering among them. Each mini-meditation is followed by a Do It Now action.
Contributors include health and fitness expert and body image coach Stephanie Mansour, lifestyle design consultant and radio show host DeAnna Radaj, Boston marathon finisher and polio survivor Mary McManus, dog sled guide and author Dagny McKinley and singer/songwriter and recording artist Donna Hill. Another compelling contributor is Olympic bobsled athlete and adventure writer Alexandra Powe Allred.
In a recent review, Publisher’s Weekly said: “The book features stirring essays from diverse contributors describing their daily practice of present-centred mindfulness. The person who reads one reflection each day from this well-conceived book is almost certain to find him or herself entering into a deeper and possibly transformative practice of appreciation for the wonder of life each moment offers.”
A portion of the book’s proceeds will also be given to four other charities.
