The International College of the Cayman Islands announced on Friday, 15 Aug. that its president, Byron Coon, would take an early retirement for family reasons, effective 31 Aug.
The college also announced that former ICCI President John Cummings will serve as interim president as of 1 Sept.
The news comes one week after ICCI announced it had become the only Premier Accredited Institution in the Cayman Islands, accredited by the UK-based Accreditation Service for International Schools, Colleges and Universities. The ‘Premier’ status places the college among a select group of privately owned internationally accredited institutions in the Caribbean, the college said in a press release on 8 Aug.
Coon, who took over the role as ICCI president in 2018, spoke about the significance of the accreditation in the press release.
“This prestigious status reflects our ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation in learning, and building global partnerships that benefit our students and the Cayman Islands community,” he said.
“As we continue to expand our program offerings and make education accessible, this accreditation motivates us to uphold the highest standards and deliver transformative opportunities for our students.”
The press release announcing his retirement noted that Coon had led ICCI through many challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and that he had advanced new academic programmes and expanded scholarship opportunities for students through strategic partnerships.
“Dr. Coon’s steady vision and dedication have transformed ICCI,” said April Cummings, chair of the ICCI Board of Trustees in the press statement.
“We extend our sincere appreciation for his invaluable contributions and welcome Dr. Cummings to lead us through the next chapter.”
Founded in 1970 and located on Hirst Road in Newlands, ICCI is an independent, non-profit institution that offers study programmes that lead to associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees.
