A 19-year-old man died in a one-car wreck along the Esterley Tibbetts Highway in the early hours of Wednesday.
The teen, identified by family members as Jaime O’Bryan Evans, was pronounced dead at the Cayman Islands Hospital shortly after the 12.18am crash. A female passenger in the silver Honda Civic Mr. Evans drove was hospitalised with injuries from the wreck, but was expected to survive.
According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the Honda was headed northbound on the Esterley just south of the Strand area when it “went out of control” and veered off, tumbling down an embankment and ending up in a parking lot.
Police were still taking measurements from the overnight crash after dawn on Wednesday and had several streets in the area blocked off.
No other cars were involved in the wreck. There was no further explanation from police as to why Mr. Evans’ vehicle suddenly went off the road.
His death marks the fourth on Cayman Islands roads so far in 2011 and he is the youngest person to die on local roads this year.
