The Cayman Islands has inspired an artist who is currently exhibiting her work in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
Ali Givens works through the medium of fabric and is part of the Reflections show running at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts until 19 June.
Givens’ art incorporates fabrics her mother and grandmother collected in their travels around the world as well as fabric she’s found in far flung places.
“The images in my work evolve, layer upon layer, and take me back to the places where I grew up – Alabama, Florida, the Cayman Islands – and to the people who were my strongest influences during those times,” Givens says.
“Every image reflects my gratitude for this rich and colourful heritage.”
Other artists involved in the show include Jude Lobe, who was inspired by a quote from self-help author Sarah Ban Breathnach, which reads: “Only when the clamour of the outside world is silenced will you be able to hear the deeper vibration. Listen carefully.”
The other person involved in the show is Renee Leverty, who works through welding and casting metal. Her approach is to remind the viewer of the importance of looking within, connecting with others and appreciating the beauty and stillness of the natural world.
The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned and operated by 22 local artists. It represents established artists exhibiting contemporary fine art and fine craft. The gallery’s offerings include painting, sculpture, ceramics, photography, fibre, jewellery, glass, metal, encaustic, enamel, watercolour, and wood.
