Cayman hosts cable conference

Cayman is playing host to the Atlantic Cable Maintenance and Repair Agreement conference this week.

The annual conference takes place in a different member country each year. Cayman was chosen five years ago, and the venue for the forum is the Marriott Beach Resort.

The Atlantic Cable Repair and Maintenance Agreement is a not-for-profit effort among more than 70 companies, including LIME, on four continents. Some 50 delegates representing 36 companies involved in the agreement were expected to attend the conference in Cayman.

With much of the global flow of data relying on submarine cables, the upkeep and repair of these cables are of vital importance in supporting communications and information-sharing. A break in this flow could prove disruptive for business and consumers in general, which is why the maintenance is vital. Cayman had a small taste of what a cable break can cause last year when an undersea quake damaged cables in the Gulf of Mexico and caused disruptions to local data and voice traffic.

The agreement provides member companies with quick access to a contracted fleet of cable repair ships, with two stationed on each side of the Atlantic, which makes for less down time should a cable break occur.

Donnie Forbes, head of service support and deliver with LIME and organising host for the event, said, “LIME is delighted to welcome all the ACMA delegates, not only to discuss business, but also to give us the opportunity to showcase our beautiful Islands.

“Technology has allowed our two core pillars of industry, tourism and finance to grow and develop into the world-class business that we know today.”
