Sunday games always exciting

The Heineken Sunday League entered summer hibernation last month after an action packed season. With entertaining games on view from the first round of fixtures when it kicked off in October and an average of over four goals per game, there wasn’t a lack of talking points.

The excitement climaxed on the last day of the season as the ultimate destination of the league trophy was in the balance right up until the final fixtures.

A victory for long term league leaders Agua Football Club against least season’s winners Harry’s, was enough for them to be deservedly crowned league champions, two points ahead of second placed Fire Pros Boca Juniors who chased them all the way until the end.

Agua dropped only 12 points throughout the season, losing on only two occasions and drawing a further three. A key factor to their success was their free scoring attack that notched 80 goals, the highest in the league. But as important, they could boast the league’s meanest defence – a real recipe for success.

The winner of the Golden Boot trophy was surprisingly not an Agua player. Instead the winner was lightning fast Mike Ebanks of Fire Pros who bagged 24 goals from just 21 league games. Last season’s Golden Boot winner, Henry Mitchell of Old Boys, had another impressive season, finishing in second place on 22 goals. Tirotta of Agua was one goal behind in third place.

Season 2011-11 was brought to a close when Agua captured their second trophy of the season after seeing off International Kickers 4-0 in the final of the CML Cup, the knock out cup competition for the Sunday League teams.

This completed quite a transformation for Agua whose extraordinary season came just 12 months after they had finished trophy-less at the bottom of the Sunday League. Quite a turnaround in fortunes.

Al Glasgow, a Harry’s player and league organiser, said: “The Sunday League organisers wish to acknowledge the help of league sponsors Heineken and cup sponsors CML Recruitment for their crucial support which made the season such an exciting and successful one.”

As Agua are left to polish their two trophies over the summer, the rest of the teams are already looking forward to the first Sunday in October when it all kicks off again.
