Cayman celebrates the Queen’s Birthday today and in honour of the Islands’ British heritage we have chosen to publish pictures of her visits here in February 1983 and 1993. The birthday of the Queen of England is celebrated each June, filling the streets with a full military dress parade, 21-gun salute.
The Queen’s birthday is celebrated as a public holiday. England took formal control of the Cayman Islands, along with Jamaica, under the Treaty of Madrid in 1670. Following several unsuccessful attempts, permanent settlement of the Islands began in the 1730s. They were governed as a single colony with Jamaica until 1962 when they became a separate Crown colony and Jamaica became an independent Commonwealth realm.
