RCIPS offers gun amnesty

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is planning a firearms amnesty for next month.

The amnesty period will be from Friday, 1 July, to Sunday, 31 July.

It will be the second such effort in two years by the police, attempting to encourage those with illegally held weapons or with firearms they believe they no longer have a need to own to turn them in.

The items can be delivered to a local police station or arrangements can be made to pick up the weapons at a prearranged location.

A weapons amnesty in May 2010 recovered 26 items that included handguns, shotguns, a taser and a flare gun. Other items recovered included a bow and arrows, a crossbow, an explosives detonator and a grenade.

Some 233 rounds of ammunition were also turned in during last year’s amnesty.
