Samuels faces Bahamain test

Lloyd Samuels recently claimed his second national championship. This summer he will try to take Cayman basketball to regional glory.

New details have been released surrounding the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Senior Men’s Championships taking place in Nassau, Bahamas. The competition takes place 23 July to 7 August and is put on by the Bahamian Basketball Federation.

In total 12 other countries are scheduled to play in Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos and the Virgin Islands. Seven of those countries are also fielding women’s teams and the ladies will play at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.

Cayman is slated to play in Zone B against hosts Bahamas, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. At the end of the tournament, the top three teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions will advance to the Centro Basket, which is made up of the top eight countries in Central America and the Caribbean. The top four sides in the Centro Basket competition move on to the FIBA Americas Zone Championships with the next step being the World Championships and the Olympics.

Samuels is a star player on Cayman’s basketball scene. A student at Tennessee-based Kings College, Samuels guided the Dominos Warriors to the division one national men’s basketball league title.
