Diabetes screening

Free diabetes screenings will be held in East End on Saturday, 18 June.

Medical staff will be at United Church Hall from 10am to 2pm to offer screenings for the people of East End and North Side.

The screenings are part of a campaign island-wide by Rotary Central that began in March, when screenings were done in seven locations on one day.

“East End was not included in March’s screening because of its somewhat remote location,” said Nurse Zelta Gayle, who was instrumental in organising the screenings. In March, almost 700 shoppers at various supermarkets were tested. During those screenings, more than 6 per cent were diagnosed as diabetics who did not know they had the disease. Some had critically high blood sugar levels and were advised to go immediately to the hospital emergency room.

Ms Gayle said no needles are involved in the screening and the results are available immediately.
