Men pass first test

Cayman’s national men’s basketball team recently passed their first test.

The squad took down an All-Stars select side 93-76 on Sunday at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The contest was part of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association national all-star week.

Suiting up for Cayman were: Jorge Ebanks, Jerome Graham-Record, Chad Leslie, Jerome Narcisse, Dwight O’Garro, Samuel O’Garro, Shaad O’Garro, Lloyd Samuels, Deandre Simpson, David Terry, Cory Thompson and Rotando Thompson. All were coached by Daniel Augustine. The All Stars team was made up of Collin Anglin, Jasen Campbell, Borislav Djordjic, Kwei General, Brandon Glasgow, Chris Lucas, Kevin Maxwell, Eckerd McField and David Taylor. They were guided by Redver Ebanks.

During the match one of the association’s raffle prizes was awarded. Josh Irby, 14, would win a men’s national team jersey from national men’s team manager Maria Kennedy and secretary Brittiney Ebanks. Irby, who plays for team Cayman Brac in the ongoing PricewaterhouseCoopers Under-16 Basketball League, states the prize was nice.

“This is pretty neat,” Irby said. “I was born in the States and came here from Kentucky about a year ago. I live in Cayman Brac and it’s been great being involved in Cayman basketball.”

The national team played again on Wednesday night against the same select squad at Camana Bay. The matches are preparation for this month’s Island Games competition (taking place in the United Kingdom’s Isle of Wight) and next month’s Caribbean Basketball Confederation Senior Championship happening in Nassau, Bahamas.
