Online poll Most prepared for hurricanes

More than 60 per cent of the respondents to last week’s caycompass.com online poll say they prepare at least “a good amount” for hurricane season.

Of the 374 total respondents, 84 – 22.5 per cent – said they prepared “very much” and 142 people – 37.9 per cent – said they prepared a good amount.

“It would be dumb of me not to have learned my lesson after Hurricane Ivan,” said one person.

“I don’t play with hurricanes after Ivan,” said someone else. “Every threat I take serious.”

“Preparing for hurricane season is a big job one year, but after that it’s about maintaining annual readiness,” said another respondent.

“I purchase dry goods, water, outdoor cooking supplies, and cleaning products like bleach over time,” said someone else. “It’s easier to gather a little at a time rather than waiting until hurricane warnings are issued.”

“I would say very much since I probably work and save all year long just to pay that huge insurance fee,” said another respondent.

Eighty-six people – 23 per cent – said they did not prepare much for hurricane season.

“I’m always prepared,” said one person. “How hard is it to have everything in order until you need them? The plan needs to be in place at all times for all sorts of disasters.”

“Long-time residents should not have much to do – shutters and documents checked, planned parking for vehicles, food and water. What else? Advise newcomers,” said another respondent.

Thirty people – 8 per cent – said they don’t prepare for hurricane season at all and 32 respondents – 8.6 per cent – said they don’t live in the Cayman Islands.

Next week’s poll question

How do you feel about the government’s big deal with the Dart Group?

I love it

I hate it

I like some of it, but dislike other parts.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I don’t know
